The Declaration of Independence: Trial Without Jury, Happened Then, Happening Now

Have you read the Declaration of Independence? You really should, so you’ll see where we came from and the fact that we’re going back to the tyranny we fought a war over. This is part 7 of 10series on the Declaration. Let’s continue with the charges.

For cutting off our Trade with all parts of the world:

For imposing Taxes on us without our Consent:

The colonists had no representation in the British Parliament, what ever was passed, the colonists had to obey and pay. This we still have today. The income tax was born in its current form in the16th Amendment. Nobody asked me before taking money from my check, whether or not I want Social Security or Medicare. As an aside its why I like a FairTax, I choose to buy or user fees. My bills don’t bother me because I’m compensating the businesses for their services. With taxes all I get is less freedom for my dollar.

For depriving us in many cases, of the benefits of Trial by Jury:

For transporting us beyond Seas to be tried for pretended offences

That’s really plain, tossed in jail without trial, taken from the Colonies to an English prison. We don’t have that now, do we…? Yes actually, its called the suspension of habeus corpus and Gitmo. You may be saying, “but those are enemy combatants, not Americans.”

After Pearl Harbor, FDR threw Japanese-Americans into internment camps. Its happened before, its happening again, and it can happen to you.

For abolishing the free System of English Laws in a neighbouring Province, establishing therein an Arbitrary government, and enlarging its Boundaries so as to render it at once an example and fit instrument for introducing the same absolute rule into these Colonies:

For taking away our Charters, abolishing our most valuable Laws, and altering fundamentally the Forms of our Governments:

For suspending our own Legislatures, and declaring themselves invested with power to legislate for us in all cases whatsoever.

What he was doing in England, he also did here. If he didn’t like the rules or local governments, he would liquidate and rewrite whenever he chose. And it wasn’t democratically either.

We defied one tyrant, fought for freedom, and birthed a nation based on the foundational right to live your own life as long as you do no harm to others. We have been moving steadily backwards from the ideals that founded America, and we should be ashamed. The power is in the people, and we abdicated that authority to faceless bureaucrats. We have a choice, Dependent or Independent. Which are you?

Next week, I’ll look at more of the charges against King George and see if we suffer under the same today.

What are your thoughts about this?
